What’s it like being back to London after travelling and living in other countries?
I grew out of it like I grew out of the dress in the six grade.
Don’t get me wrong, London is a great city. London has a lot to offer. London is one of the most exciting places in Europe. Oh wait, it’s no longer part of Europe it’s a great place in an island. I used to consider London as a mini New York. I have no idea what I am talking about because I have never been to New York.
While Trump is running the country there’s no way I will set my foot in America. Therefore, it was and still is my imaginary idea of London. What did I used to love about London? I keep on asking myself. The first answer that came to me was — I loved the space. Compare that to Guildford, for example, where I first lived in the UK, sure space is amazing.
I love theatre and opera and London is great for that particularly for Autumn and Winter seasons. I love art and there’s plenty of art in London. London has a great cinema and I love great films. London has a massive variety of food choices any cuisine you’ll probably find here even Lithuanian cuisine is in London. All of that is great but….
London hasn’t got a heart and soul. What I mean by it is people’s attitude stinks like a dog’s poo. It’s all so pretentious. I didn’t notice that before. Because I was blind to it and I was part of it. I was part of the corporate world nonsense. I am a manager of this or that. I earn x amount and I have this big house. I go on this holiday and etc.
It’s all about how much you have not about your soul. London was always about money even if you don’t want to it always is. For instance, rent a place in London — the prices are astronomical and you get nothing for it. Where’s the value in that? You live in a box but in a great city with lots of food, theatre, art and cinema.
Most of the time you cannot afford any of that if you are not working in a company where they pay you shit loads of money. With shit loads money comes the shit attitude to everything because it becomes about being cool, labels, trends, being famous and the bling. If you care about superficial things you are an empty human being. You forget about the soul and heart.
I never cared about how much I’ve got or how small the house I lived in. I always cared about the soul and the heart. What gets me with London is the quality of life here! Actually there’s no quality of life here. What exists is inflated prices for a box you’ve got to squeeze yourself in and the bling. Owners of businesses in Barcelona walk around with t-shirts and shorts.
They don’t need a suit to squeeze in their power and show off how much they own. All they care about are you ok, is your family well, is your horse ok and so on. Rarely do people ask ‘what do you do for work’! They are more interested in conversations of the soul rather than how much you’ve got and how big is your house.
In other parts of Europe people care about good living conditions, have enough space to live in and have good food and that doesn’t require corporate nonsense! It’s a basic human right but for some reason in the UK that requires a job in a corporate world where it pays you a reasonable amount. You can then get a mortgage and slave away your life to a big house in a middle of nowhere.
Lifestyle that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg is what I strive for. A big house in a beautiful part of Barcelona costs less than one bedroom flat in East London. You get the sea, the mountains and a life of your dreams without the corporate nonsense. The people are nice no one pretends to be better than you. There’s nothing wrong living in a city like London if you don’t lose your heart and soul.
