When one looses someone then you hear about how much they loved that person. How much they would have loved to spend more time with them and etc. Then, you’ll see post after post on their social media platform saying how much they are going through because they didn’t say how much they loved that person.
I have seen this so many times from many different people. Even I am guilty of that. My father passed away and I said it’s important to value people nearest to you. However, I spoke less and felt more. I made an effort to spend more time with people I care about. However, my pet hate is when people going on and on about it and do nothing.
It’s like an alcoholic promising to never drink again but a week later you’ll see the person drinking again. Those who do go on about it very little act on what they say. It’s guaranteed they are doing the same thing a week later.
One of the ways to avoid not regretting something is less talking more action. Create a structure where you make yourself achieve something without talking about it. Imagine that?! Not telling someone about what you set out to do and then do it. After you’ve done it — shout to the whole world of your achievement.
If you don’t change something now, you will always regret it later. It’s much harder not talk about something and do it. It’s hard not to talk about what you are going through because everyone love to talk about themselves and how much they are suffering. Not talking and doing is definitely a challenge why not try it?
Another way not to fall into the regret tunnel is always dream about something and never to do it. For instance, you always wanted to write a book but it’s just a dream. You don’t do anything to further it. Time is ticking like a massive bomb and you are still dreaming about it. There’s no perfect time to do anything so do it now.
Otherwise, you might end up the same story as someone else is today on their last breath with just dreaming about doing something and never doing it. Everyone says it’s so much better to fail than not do it all. You have nothing to lose but gain.
Third and final way not to fall into the regret trap is stop thinking about the past. The past is over! It’s more often than not I am stuck in the past of something I did or didn’t do. If I want to achieve something today the past is in the past. Forget it and move on! Easier said than done, I know! The past seem to creep up on you even when you think you’ve forgotten it.
The past is what keeps most people away from what they want to achieve. That’s why many people like to deconstruct themselves in bars four or five times a week. That’s why many people like to live in a haze of the dream of what might be but never a reality. If one drinks every day that dream might be a reality. However, one chooses how ones life.
I have always loved the expression: “actions speak louder than words”. It’s hard to do things you want because one has to come out of its own shell. It’s like walking naked on a street full of people. What’s the worst can happen? Regret on your death bed? Or you can say I failed something because of these reasons?
The choice I make today defines my future. The choice I make every second defines my now. The choice I make tomorrow defines me. The choices we make, make us who we are. If I live in fear I never do what I want to do. I will fall in the trap of regret.
If I don’t take that breath in, and jump in, I will never know what it could have been. Why live in a wonder? Everyone says we live only once. We only have one life. Go and make it happen!
