Stop trying to be different — you already are

Why everyone is so obsessed with being different? Everyone has the same phones. Everyone aims to look the same by buying the same clothes, adding fake eyelashes, make up and etc…Isn’t boring? Corporate offices make everyone the same too. The start up culture wants to mix things up by injecting the office culture with wear whatever the hell you like but everyone is the same.

So many people trying to be different by doing something to themselves and “screaming” about it on social media platforms. Saying ‘hey, look at me, I am so cool!’ I go on a holiday, which is the same choice as my colleagues. I buy a house with a mortgage as my colleagues do. Corporate world or start up business it’s all the same. Everyone follows the same “template” of life and working hard on being different.

I worked in both worlds — corporate and the agency. I can tell you they are all the same. Yeah, they define themselves differently. I know a lot of people don’t want to admit it but it’s all about the money. When I was in a corporate world I became so obsessed in earning more, being more and climbing the corporate ladder.

I was successful. However, it depends on how one defines a success. That’s another topic! I wanted all the titles and the superiority. It’s not my fault. It’s how it is when you are in a corporate world. I really did get sucked into it. I didn’t even see it then. I was so much of a corporate world person.

The great eye opening was the stupidest line manager I had. She wasn’t human. She was a robot of the corporate system. Everyone in the office thought she had an affair with the boss. She thought she had to be tough in front of everyone but she forgot what mattered the most. People will give you their heart and soul if you know how to motivate them.

She had no clue. She thought by working in a company where I was working I was already privileged to be there. But it’s the other way around. The company is privileged to have me. The sad truth is when I was so sucked in into the corporate world I didn’t see it that way because I was so brainwashed by the corporate world nonsense.

What I mean by the corporate world nonsense is the companies don’t like individual thinking and ideas. They hone you into their thinking as a result I end up thinking the same, working the same, creating the same and being the same. I go home as everyone else. I might go to the gym or go for a run or whatever my fix is at that time of the day.

And do the same in the morning. I am not surprised people are obsessed in being different and cool. People get sick of the same lame game in the office. But what’s super sad is people start to think the corporate world is not that bad. The people they hang out with are cool. It’s all superficial and not real. Let me ask you a question, you must have changed jobs at least once, where are your ex colleagues now?

Being cool is not sustainable. The trends change as fast as the fashion shows. It’s tiring to be different and cool all the time. The irony is that everyone is cool and different by definition. Why then work so hard on something that you already are….?

The sea is the same as the eye can see but every wave is different! Have you ever tried to catch a wave in the sea? You will see every wave is different, one is fat, another is thin, one is aggressive, another is gentle, one is smooth, another has an attitude and so on… It’s a continuous movement of different waves.

People are the same. Everyone is different, cool and amazing in their own right. The gifts you have no else has. We are made of the same “material” in terms of skin, internal organs, bones, hands, legs, faces and etc but our souls are different and unique. By living in a culture where everything is the same don’t try to be different be your true authentic self. No one needs to add extra pressure to be different.

Humans tend to change all the time too. Did you know you are not the same as you were two weeks ago? It is scientifically proven the skin cells generate all the time. The question is do you fill yourself up with what your soul and heart desires or with an empty chase of trying to be different and cool?

There’s no other Erika like me. It’s huge when I understood it. I have all the responsibility to be and become. I can become whomever I want! I have all the power to create and destroy. I have the power to change the world. Why then would I waste my time in being different and cool?

We are here for a limited time on this planet. Ever day is a day you will not have it back. The time is quietly ticking and there is no time being different and cool. Waste your time in trying to change the world. Shine your unique light through your soul.
