How Drinking Most of the Week gets People Significantly Depressed and Lose a Life

Alcohol is big!
People go out drinking almost most of the nights of the week. I saw it when I worked at an agency and corporate world. People would have drinks on Tuesday because a deal come through. Wednesday have a drink because there’s a board meeting and it’s a must have a glass of wine or beer. Thursday go out night and have some fun it’s a new Friday after all.
Friday is a start of the weekend so let’s get smashed. Saturday some kind of party and Sunday a recovery day with a glass of a bubbly for lunch. If a deal comes through on a Monday or some classic office nonsense pops up a drink is guaranteed. This cycle continues for years. I simply couldn’t keep up. I subscribed to a few drinks on an occasional Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
I have suffered as a result. I have been told not to drink. My body cannot handle alcohol. My body is allergic to it. Most people are but if one drinks like there’s no tomorrow the allergy evaporates into a thin air. I have never been a fan of drinking but would end up having one too many on a few occasions. All it would do to me is set me back a few days. It would send me to sleep too.
I would be behind my life. Life is precious why would I want to have recovery days? Days where I would spend in bed and couldn’t get out of it because I felt so bad. Alcohol consumption would make my whole body refuse to function. I decided not to drink anymore not because I go crazy when I drink but because my body doesn’t work well afterwards.
What surprises me the most about alcohol how people change when they drink. They seem to become different people. People I never knew. My father liked alcohol a bit too much and too often. He would transform once he had a few shots of vodka. He’d become Mr Hyde! I had to hide from Mr. Hyde because if I got in a way, well, you can imagine.
Some people drink and drink and drink. They don’t seem to have a switch off button. They’d drink until they get into cupboards in the kitchen; wake up on streets and wouldn’t remember what had happened to them. A colleague of mine told me her stories of alcoholism she didn’t know when to stop. She had to get some help to stop drinking.
She used to tell me she’d drink until she couldn’t understand what’s around her. The drinking world would consume her and make her into a “magical being” of things only she knew where real. Alcohol takes away a lot from people. They lose homes, families, jobs, their decency, their life and everything one can think of — it’s lost.
The only thing they have is the devil liquor. They cannot stop. I know a lady who drank herself to death. She was told by doctors to stop drinking otherwise she’ll die. She didn’t believe them. Had a few drinks and ended up dead. Drinking make people go crazy! It’s dangerous when drunk people drive. I’ve seen drunk people on a motorbike.
Why would cause danger to others and yourself? When people are drunk they seem to lose all their inhibitions as well as common sense. Common sense isn’t that common! Sober people would never even dream of drunk driving! After a few glasses people think it’s ok. Strange! Alcohol does weird stuff to a body and brain. It’s one of the greatest depression tools too.
Alcohol is a best friends with a depression. People end up in a vicious cycle of drinking, getting depressed and drink again. Or be depressed have a drink feel great and then fall in a slum and drink again. It’s all about letting go and forget the pain. Alcohol gives one an illusion that life is rosy and beautiful which makes it worse when one gets up the next day with a soaring hangover.
People do crazy shit because of alcohol. People lose themselves in self deconstruction and depression by becoming somebody they are not while on liquor. One has to pay close attention to what they are doing every night. It’s hard to be different and not drink with your colleagues. I used to go and get a drink myself of cranberry juice and pretend it’s cranberry juice with vodka.
People don’t want you to be different. They want you to be the same as them. They want you to suffer as they are. Maybe it’s a dim view, however, everyone called me weirdo if I didn’t drink with them. One has to have vision, focus and goals not to get sucked in into the nonsense of a super inviting loop that drag you to hell.
I see the appeal and that there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks after work. However, if you have a few drinks after work for years you’d end up like a friend of mine who drank herself to death or at alcoholics anonymous. In a corporate, creative or agency world people see alcohol as part of bonding or getting to know each other better.
In a Korean culture people make you drunk so they see if they can trust you when you sober. Drinking has become a norm when closing business deals. It’s a norm to entertain clients and get them drunk. Drinking and being drunk is associated with fun and part of a culture. One doesn’t fit in if it doesn’t drink. It is frowned upon if you don’t participate in a drinking game.
Think of it this way, there will always be a reason to drink and there will always be people to drink with as long as you have some cash. As soon as your cash drys out no one will be there for you to help you. The choice is be Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to destroy yourself in a vicious circle of death or be different and learn to be strong. There’s only one life to achieve your dreams why waste it in deconstructing yourself?
